BYD's Hungarian plant slips a year

Szeged production is reported as pushed from Q4 2025 to Q4 2026, after a fine over contaminated soil and a new government ending fast-track exemptions.

Assembly at Szeged, as originally slated and as now reported. a year Q4 2025 Q1 2026 Q2 2026 Q3 2026 Q4 2026 planned reported Reported, not announced: BYD has published no revised start date of its own.

BYD’s Szeged plant is the factory that was meant to make its European cars European. It is reported to have slipped from a fourth-quarter 2025 start to a fourth-quarter 2026 one, and the reasons given are regulatory rather than industrial.

Affected#

European buyers, indirectly and not yet. A car built in Hungary is not subject to the European Union’s tariffs on Chinese-built electric vehicles, so local production is the mechanism by which BYD’s European prices stop depending on trade policy. A year of delay is a year of that not happening.

Nothing changes for a car already delivered. Warranty, parts and software are unaffected by where the next ones are built.

Szeged is also the first of the four plants BYD’s European adviser says the region will eventually need — see BYD wants four European factories.

Confirmed#

As reported:

  • Production at Szeged, originally slated for Q4 2025, has been pushed back to Q4 2026.
  • BYD was fined 10 million forints, about $31,000, over allegations of dumping contaminated soil onto farmland.
  • Hungary’s government, in office since April 2026, has ended the exemptions that let major investment projects bypass parts of environmental review.
  • BYD’s European headquarters is in Hungary.

Added 20 September 2026, from reporting we had not checked when this was written:

  • Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice-president, gave the Q4 2026 date to Reuters on 9 June, at BYD’s UK headquarters: “Hungary is the number one priority right now. The second priority will be to focus on finding a second (production) facility in Europe.” Equipment was still being installed.
  • The Dolphin Surf is the first model off the line.
  • Designed capacity is 150,000 vehicles a year, expandable to 300,000.
  • Szeged began trial production early in 2026 with about 960 employees, and vehicle assembly is expected in November or December.

Unconfirmed#

  • BYD’s own account of the delay. Li gave the new date but not the reasons; no BYD statement addresses the environmental fine or the exemptions, and the company has published no bulletin of its own. The causes are reported, not announced.
  • How many cars in the first year. Reuters sources said in July 2025 that Szeged would build “a few tens of thousands” in 2026 and stay below capacity for at least two years — BYD disputed that report at the time, and no 2026 source repeats the figure.
  • Whether the fine caused the delay. The report places the two together. A 10 million forint penalty is small against a plant of this size, and a fine is not on its own an explanation for a year.
  • What it means for prices here. Any effect on what a BYD costs in Europe is a chain of inferences, not a reported fact.
